Ling Jiangtang Dan No. 1 (Bloodsugar-declining pellet No. 1)
[Main components] Root of Mongolian snakegourd (radix Trechosanthis), rhizome of common anemarrhena (rhizome Anemarrhena asphodeloides), root of dwarf lilyturf (radix Ophiopogon japonicum), and others (processed from pure traditional Chinese medicine, none of western medicine is included).
[Efficacy] Nourish Yin to clear away fire, replenish Qi to nourish stomach.
[Indications] Diabetes with symptoms of emaciation or obesity with feebleness, thirst with overdrinking, polyphagia with susceptibility to hunger, fatigue with lassitude of limbs, and others.
[Explanation of the prescription] As the statement in Gujin Luyian quoted by Waitaimiyao Xiaokexiaozhong: “Diabetes is the disease with symptoms including thirst and overdrinking, frequent urination with greasy appearance and branny sweet taste.” In this prescription, drugs for nourishing Yin to clear away fire are chosen as the “monarch”, drugs for replenishing Qi to nourish stomach are chosen as the “minister”. Nourishing of Yin to clear away fire is targeting to the asthenia-fire, and replenishing of Qi to nourish stomach is targeting to promote the transportation and transformation. Once water has ascended and fire descended, the middle energizer will become invigorated to recover Qi and Yin, the symptoms of diabetes will thus be relieved. |

[Curative effect] In general, the effect could be felt after 3-10 days of medication. And, for mild cases, blood sugar will return to normal by 1 to 3 courses of treatment (50 days for each course) and become recovery after a period of consolidation (approximately 1/3-1/2 time course of treatment); no more medication will be needed and no rebound will occur after stopping medication. For serious cases, blood sugar will continuously decrease along with each course of treatment, and, in relation to the differences of age, constitution, condition and course of disease, and the medicinal sensibility, the patients may generally recover with more courses of treatment. |
[Precaution]
(1) This preparation can be taken directly if the patient does not take western blood sugar descending medicine. Whereas, patients who usually take western medicine should not stop this medication immediately when take Ling Jiangtang Dan. When blood sugar decreases definitely to below 6 mmol (empty stomach) and 7.8mmol (after meal) by taking Ling Jiangtang Dan, western medicine may then decrease slightly and gradually. If the decrease of western medicine is too much so that the level of blood sugar rebounds, the amount of western medicine ought to increase appropriately. By way of adjusting the quantity, western medicine will finally be stopped. Blood sugar should be measured every day. As the level of blood sugar return to normal, recovery can be achieved after a period of consolidation; no more medication, neither western nor Chinese, will be needed thereafter, and no rebound will occur after stopping medication.
(2) As the indices have decreased to the abovementioned values, if the medicine used is of slow releasing type and is difficult to break off with hands, it is better to adopt smaller one or fast releasing type to facilitate the quantity adjustment of western medicine. Besides, when the fast releasing form is not satisfactory for blood sugar control, it is suitable to use the original slow releasing form; but it ought to be kept in mind that blood sugar should not be too low.
