Chapter 3 Anyu’s theory of comparison
§ 3  Flavors of drug and chemical synthesis
There is an exterior-interior relationship between drug and therapy. Special medication is always accompanied by special treatment. Characteristic theory of pharmacological study should be reflected in the effect of medicines.
   1)  Action of flavors in Anyu’s miraculous medicines
The reason why Anyu’s miraculous medicine series can cure various stubborn diseases is closely related to Anyu’s ingenious application of invisible flavors of pure natural drugs. Anyu utilizes the efficacy of four properties (cold, heat, warm, cool) and five flavors of herbs (pungent, sweet, sour, bitter and salty), then these invisible flavors will be delivered via meridians and collaterals to the disordered zang-fu organs to execute their therapeutic function. For example, in case of treating coronary disease, after taken orally and absorbed, when the sweet and pungent flavors of Anyu’s miraculous medicine are transported through meridians and collaterals into the heart, they may exert the effect of replenishing Qi to dredge Yang, and significantly promote the therapeutic effect of Anyu’s medicine in treating coronary disease.
Each of the five flavors enters its favorite zang-organ: sour flavors entering the liver, bitter flavors entering the heart, pungent flavors entering the lung, sweet flavors entering the spleen, and salty flavors entering the kidney. Pungency may function as dissipation and promotion, sweetness may function as nourishment, harmonization and relaxation, sourness may function as astringent, bitterness may clear and remove dampness, and saltiness may soften mass and facilitate purgation. The five flavors are specially composed in Anyu’s miraculous prescription, so that, the function of every drug in the prescription not only can be brought into fully play with enhanced curative efficacy, but also the original function of drug can be somewhat altered to meet the requirement of Anyu’s treatment. Besides, such composition is capable of eliminating some undesired factor of drugs in the prescription. For instance, sweet flavor can invigorate the deficiency of Qi, blood, Yin and Yang in five zang-organs, however, when the sweet drug for blood-nourishing is supplemented with adequate sweet and pungent flavor, not only it may enhance blood nourishing but also it may simultaneously promote the blood circulation. Since such nourishment is not accompanied by stagnation, it is then just needed for the therapeutic purpose.
After processed and composed according to the required compatibility of pure natural herbs, Anyu’s miraculous medicine will be transported and transformed in spleen and stomach; and, through the Qi-transformation, the resulting invisible special flavor (i.e. physiological activity or efficacy of drug) will pass via meridians and collaterals and reach the focus of illness, achieving its curative effect. Such kind of strategy is in accordance with what documented in Huangdi Neijing—Lingshu— Yin-Yang Yingxiang Dalun: “Diet and drug can be divided into Yin and Yang according to their taste and flavor, Yang means flavor and Yin means taste. Once diet gets into human body, it will undergo Qi-transformation, the resulting quintessence of five flavors functions to nourish the body and promote the production of primordial Qi; diet Qi can warm and nourish the essence and promote Qi-transformation. In other words, Human essence and body are nourished from the adsorbed Qi and flavor in the diet, and Yin essence can also transform into primordial Qi”.
